Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Grease a 20cm round cake pan.
-
Using an electric mixer, cream 1 cup butter and sugar together until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. With mixer on low speed, add eggs, one at a time, and 1 tsp vanilla extract.
-
In a separate bowl, sift together cocoa powder, flour, baking powder, and baking soda. Add to butter mixture in three parts alternately with 1 cup milk, beginning and ending with dry ingredients.
-
Bake until a cake tester comes out clean when inserted into the centre, about 30 minutes. Set aside to cool.
-
Meanwhile, to make the icing, use electric mixer to cream remaining butter on medium speed until smooth. Add cocoa and icing sugar and mix until combined.
-
With mixer on low speed, add the remaining milk and vanilla extract and mix until icing is smooth. If too thick, add more milk; if too thin, add more icing sugar.
-
Ice cake and cover with all your favourite chocolate toppings! Enjoy!
