Method
- Preheat your oven to 180°C.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, white sugar, and brown sugar until the mixture is smooth.
- Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
- In a small bowl, dissolve the baking soda in hot water and then add it to the batter.
- Gradually mix in the salt and flour to the batter.
- Stir in the chocolate chips and the chopped nuts (if using).
- Using a spoon, drop large dollops of cookie dough onto an ungreased baking sheet.
- Bake the cookies in the preheated oven for about 10 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown.
- Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. Tie up batches with string to give away as gifts!
